DIY Embroidered Converse: How to Customize Your Sneakers with Stick & Stitch Patterns
Share
Looking to add a little flair to your kicks? If you love embroidery and live in your Converse, you’re going to fall in love with this simple, beginner-friendly DIY: embroidered Converse shoes using stick and stitch patterns!
This trendy, personalized project is the perfect way to mix fashion and creativity — and YES, it’s easier than you think.
What You’ll Need
To get started on your own custom Converse shoes, here’s what you’ll need:
- A pair of high-top Converse (light-colored canvas works best)
- Converse stick & stitch patterns from my shop
- OR Converse printable patterns + water soluble stabilizer to print on yourself
- Embroidery floss (I used DMC pinks, purples, and greens)
- Embroidery needle (I used a size 5)
- Small sharp scissors
Step-by-Step: How to Embroider Converse Shoes
1. Choose Your Design
The beauty of stick and stitch is the simplicity — peel and place your pattern right where you want it. I recommend going around the Converse logo, or if you are stitching on low top Converse you can cut the pattern in half and place it along the top.
2. Stick It On
Peel off the stabilizer from the backing, place your pattern on the shoe, and press it down firmly. It stays on the shoe acting as a stencil while you stitch — then disappears with water once you’re done!
3. Start Stitching
Using your favorite thread colors, start embroidering the design directly onto the canvas. The fabric is thick, so a strong, sharp needle is key. If you are struggling to pull your thread through, consider using a pair of pliers to help and save your hands the struggle!
Stitch with basic stitches like:
- Back stitch or stem stitch (for stems)
- Satin stitch (for petals)
- Lazy daisy (perfect for petals and leaves)
- Leaf stitch (the basic stitch for leaves)
- French knots (for floral accents)

4. Rinse & Reveal
When you’re done stitching, rinse the pattern under lukewarm water for 3-5 minutes using mild soap to scrub off all of the stabilizer. The stick and stitch dissolves like magic, leaving only your beautiful embroidery behind. If you see any stabilizer or ink, rinse again with soap!

DIY Custom Converse FAQs
Can I wash the shoes after embroidery?
Yes — spot clean gently by hand. Avoid tossing them in the washer to protect your stitches.
Does it work on all types of Converse?
Yes! Canvas high-tops or low-tops are perfect. Just make sure the surface is stitchable.
What if I mess up?
The best part of embroidery is its flexibility! You can always remove stitches or even stitch over a mistake. Imperfection = handmade charm.
