How to Avoid Ink Bleeds: Washing Stabilizer Off Your Embroidered Sweaters
Share
Embroidering a sweater can give it that personal touch that makes it truly unique. One tool that I love to use when embroidering sweaters is water-soluble self-adhesive stabilizer. This handy material simplifies the process of transferring a pattern and ensures your stitches are stabilized.
If you need help designing patterns for embroidered sweaters, I have pre-made templates that you can print yourself at home on the stabilizer.
However, once your embroidered sweater is complete, you’re faced with the task of removing the stabilizer. This crucial step ensures your embroidery looks its best and your sweater remains soft and comfortable. But how do you wash off the stabilizer to avoid ink bleeding and stiffness? Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process of washing off stabilizer.
1. Start with a Clean Surface
Before you begin washing your embroidered sweater, ensure the area is clean. This will prevent any additional dirt or debris from getting trapped in the fabric during the washing process.
2. Rinse Thoroughly
- Duration: Rinse the sweater under running water for 3-5 minutes.
- Thoroughness: Make sure every part of the embroidery is thoroughly rinsed to remove all traces of the stabilizer.
3. Remove Stabilizer Under Stitches
- Wash Stabilizer Caught Under the Stitches: Carefully work your fingers under the embroidery to remove any stabilizer stuck underneath the embroidery stitches.
- Prevent Bleeding: Ink bleeding often occurs because stabilizer was left under the stitches. Removing it meticulously can prevent this issue.
- For White or Light Colored Yarn and Sweaters: If you are using white yarn or sweaters and feel like it’s not washing off well from the jump, go ahead and apply mild dish soap during the first wash and then run the sweater through your normal laundry.
4. Drying Options
- Air Dry or Laundry: You can either air dry the sweater or run it through your normal laundry cycle. My personal preference is laundry because baby sweaters will be washed all the time anyways because babies are messy!!
Additional Tips:
- Dealing with Stiffness: If your sweater feels stiff after drying, gently work the sweater fabric to loosen it up. The stabilizer can sometimes cause stiffness in the sweater due to the sweater material sticking together. Once you loosen it up, run it through your normal laundry cycle again.
- Addressing Ink Bleed: If you notice ink bleed after washing, don’t panic. Wash the sweater again and massage a mild soap and water solution into the affected area. Ensure the solution reaches under the stitches, as this is likely where the ink bled from. Blot gently and rinse with clean water.
By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your embroidered sweater looks its best and remains soft and comfortable to wear. With a little care and attention, you can enjoy your personalized creation for years to come!
